TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Rachel's primary goal as a teacher is to create confident performers who excel both in technique and expression. Lessons provide each student with individualized instruction in vocal technique, performance preparation, and basic music appreciation to foster independence and self-motivation. In addition to weekly private voice lessons, Rachel believes it is essential for students to have as many performance opportunities as possible, whether in scene study, in a leading role, or as a member of the ensemble.

Beyond instruction, Rachel's eight years as a university voice teacher have given her immeasurable experience helping young artists navigate how to become industry professionals. She actively engages contacts from her own ongoing performance career to help build bridges for students. She has taught all ages from pre-school to retirement, and maintains an active roster of remote students all over the country.

The study of vocal performance is a life-long endeavor. It requires honest evaluation and a dedicated work ethic. Engaging in this process, and committing to consistent, diligent practice, will produce great performers as well as self-aware, confident, and courageous people.  There can be no music without skilled and knowledgeable performers to produce it.

TESTIMONIALS

Rachel Black works professionally, efficiently, and effectively. Her unique teaching style kindles creativity and musicality. There are few coaches that base their coaching in classical training in the musical theatre world and Rachel's approach is a beautiful incorporation of both styles. She creates performers that shine above others in their craft and she is the basis for long, healthy careers.

"Rachel Black was my voice teacher for 4 years, and I could not have asked for a better instructor. Her personal experience as a performer, extensive knowledge of technique and vocal pedagogy, and investment in my personal growth as both a student and a person have all contributed to my success in her voice classes as well as in my career. She is incredibly kind, extremely qualified, and immensely invested in the well-being of her students. I would not be the performer I am today without her."

Rachel Black is a remarkable voice teacher. She has an incredible ability to help students, regardless of what level they are at, to continually find growth. Through her, I was able to book my first professional summer job during college and it is through her that I continue to make professional connections. The growth I have made since working with Rachel and the growth I have witnessed in my peers is incredible. The time and dedication she gives to each student is invaluable and allows for exponential growth. Because of her, I am able to understand how to use my instrument healthily and to my fullest potential!

“Rachel Black really lives by the standard of full talent no marking, which she exclaims during every lesson. Why? Because she expects nothing from herself, or her students, other than their best. She taught me to strive to work harder than ever before, not by force, but with inspiration. I now have a true understanding of things I never opened my mind to, because Rachel Black taught me that “full talent no marking” isn’t just about our voice lessons, it’s about my future, my dreams, my life. Without Rachel Black, I probably would have given up on my career path, because I wasn’t ready... you see, all I was really doing before working with this amazing mentor, was... well, marking! Now, I’m full talent! Thanks Rachel!”
